Its infrastructure is based on so-called open source hardware which is the result of international cooperation between companies in China, Europe, Japan and USA. This means that the hardware design of Rapid Space follows the current best practices and can be produced in any country without costly licence fee and without the risk of trade sanctions.
The cloud management software of Rapid Space is entirely open source. It is developed by an international team of developers in Asia, America and Europe with more than 10 nationalities. It was originally designed by Nexedi, Europe's largest open source / Free Software publisher. It was taught for the first time in 2011 at Hangzhou Dianzi University (China) and has been taught since then every year at Telecom ParisTech university (France).
The combination of open source hardware and open source software provides lower price, higher trust, more flexibility and better security by design in an international context.
In Europe, servers are produced by ITRenew based on circular economy, a business model and technology that can save up to 87% CO2 emissions but which does not exist yet in some countries (China, Brazil, Turkey, etc.). Servers used in Shanxi (China) data centre are based on original design from Facebook (USA) which was then been improved by MITAC (Taiwan) and produced in Shunde (Guangdong). The same type of server is used by Yahoo! Japan.
Networking equipment used by Rapid Space is designed by Edge-core, part Accton group in Taiwan and produced in Shenzen (China). The same type of equipment if used by Tencent, JD, Microsoft or Tesla all over the world. For Europe, we are considering networking equipment made in the European Union by Stordis.
Rapid Space cloud operation management is based on SlapOS software. In 2009, SlapOS was the first general purpose edge computing software. Edge computing is a key technology for 5G and Industry 4.0 which SlapOS has already been supporting for many years through deployments in the automotive industry and telecommunication's virtual radio access networks (VRAN).
Rapid Space networking is based on re6st and babel, two technologies that can circumvent network congestion and reduce latency on a distributed infrastructure. Congestion and latency are two major challenges in countries such as China with dense population or in global cloud infrastructures.
